Manchester United handing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the job is an unavoidable mistake, says Simon Jordan
Manchester United have made an unavoidable mistake by appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their permanent manager, according to Simon Jordan. The worst-kept secret in football was finally confirmed on Thursday as the Norwegian signed a three-year deal to become full-time bossof the Red Devils.Ole’s at the wheel – and this time it’s permanent2

Old Trafford legend Solskjaer has breathed new life into the United team since taking over from Jose Mourinho in December. He has revived the clubs top four hopes and also steered them to the quarter-finals of the Champions League. His appointment, therefore, is unsurprising and was widely expected. But Jordan believes the club have made the wrong call by not bringing in a more experienced coach to help United bridge the gap to their top rivals. The former Crystal Palace owner said: The reason I say its an unavoidable mistake is because their performances have justified the appointment, but Manchester United are in a difficult position. Its been six years since they last won the Premier League title and there are three sides who are better than them – Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham.I think they can bridge the gap player-wise, but heres the conundrum there are three better managers than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.Pep Guardiola is clearly the leading light in management right now, Jurgen Klopp isnt far behind and has won things, and Mauricio Pochettino working the oracle at Spurs.United are behind them all on the field and theyre out of the habit of winning the Premier League. Its a big thing when you dont win the league, ask Liverpool fans theyve forgotten how to win it and theyre 29 years down the line now.Guardiola and Klopp are leagues ahead of Solskjaer, believes Simon Jordan2
Guardiola and Klopp are leagues ahead of Solskjaer, believes Simon Jordan
If Liverpool were to win the Premier League this year and get their act together, you might find they really galvanise themselves and the distance between them and United gets even greater. While theyve made the appointment because the performances have justified it, its one thing fixing something thats broken but its another thing building your own team. The dynamics change.I might be giving Solskjaer a bit of a disservice, but I think its short term thinking and possibly a long-term problem. Are we really seriously saying Solskjaer is going to out-think Guardiola, out-do Klopp and stand up to Pochettino? I dont think so.
